Vznik Premier League
Anglická Premier League je najsledovanejšia futbalová liga na svete. Svojou nespornou kvalitou a lukratívnymi podmienkami lákajú kluby Premier League do svojich radov najlepších hráčov z celého sveta. Preto ťažko uveriť, že samotná hitória súťaže, ako ju poznáme v dnešnej podobe, má relatívne krátku históriu. Tá sa začala písať prvým výkopom 15.augusta 1992.
Anglický futbal bol v roku 1980 na dne. Futbalové stánky sa rozpadávali a výtržníctvo pred a počas zápasov nemalo konca. Anglické tímy boli vylúčené z európskych súťaží po tragédii, ktorá sa odohrala v Belgicku na Heysel Stadium v roku 1985 vo finále Európskeho pohára medzi FC Liverpool a Juventusom Turín. Na štadióne došlo k tragédii, počas ktorej prišlo o život 39 fanúšikov. Vtedy ani jeden z najlepších svetových hráčov nepomýšľal na kariéru v Anglicku.
O štyri roky neskôr, v roku 1989, prišlo k tragédii na Hillsborough, kde počas semifinále FA Cupu medzi FC Liverpool a Nottinghamom Forest zahynulo 96 fanúšikov a viac ako 150 bolo zranených. Od tohto momentu bolo súdom nariadená úplná rekonštrukcia štadiónov, súčasťou ktorej musela byť sedačková výstavba, únikové východy a dobrá infraštruktúra.
Kluby sa búrili, nespokojné boli hlavne s veľkými finančnými nákladmi, ktoré museli byť investované do rekonštrukcií. Obávali sa, či sa im napriek všetkému podarí prilákať do súťaže kvalitných hráčov. Nespokojnosť vládla hlavne medzi top klubmi. Už v roku 1988 desať klubov pohrozilo, že sa zo súťaže odhlásia, čím by zvýšili svoje príjmy z oblasti predaja televíznych práv.
Všetci však vedeli, že v súťaži je potrebná radikálna reštrukturalizácia, aby sa kvalita v anglickom futbale začala opäť rozvíjať.
17.júla 1991 bola podpísaná dohoda, ktorá určovala základné princípy novotvoriacej sa Premier League. Liga mala byť v prvom rade nezávislá od futbalovej asociácie v organizovaní obchodov s televíznymi spoločnosťami a v uzatváraní sponzorských zmlúv.
Dňa 20.februára 1992 odstúpili z prvej futbalovej ligy všetky kluby, aby o tri mesiace neskôr boli už súčasťou novozaloženej Premier League.
Televízne práva boli pridelené Sky TV. V tej dobe bolo veľmi dôležité získať si fanúšikov na svoju stranu, preto kvalita prenosov futbalových zápasov musela byť na najvyššej úrovni. Marketingová stratégia Sky TV a kvalita Premier League bola dobrým základom, preto sa nikto neobával, že tvoriaci sa projekt stroskotá. Prvá zmluva bola uzatvorená na 5 rokov, v hodnote 191 miliónov libier. Pre porovnanie, televízne prenosy z obdobia 2007-2010 mali hodnotu neuveriteľných 1,7 bilióna libier.
